Behind the Crown: Documenting a Legacy — high school film and media project

HIGH SCHOOL FILM & MEDIA PROJECT

Behind the Crown: Documenting a Legacy

A Student Film & Media Production Project Featuring Dobreena Helm

What does a woman do with the crown after she wins it?

Behind the Crown invites selected Newark Public Schools students to help document Dobreena Helm’s continuing journey during her reign as Senior Miss Black America. The story reaches beyond the pageant stage to capture school presentations, community service, health and wellness advocacy, performances, tourism, media appearances, preparation, challenges, accomplishments, and personal reflections.

A Real-World Student Production

Students would work with a real subject, events, interviews, production schedules, deadlines, and creative decisions. Depending on the school’s curriculum, opportunities could include:

  • Film and video production, cinematography, and directing
  • Interviewing, scriptwriting, journalism, and photography
  • Lighting, audio, editing, and post-production
  • Graphic design, promotional media, and marketing
  • Theater and narration

Educational & Career Value

Designed to complement appropriate CTE, media, film, television, theater, journalism, communications, visual arts, and related programs, the project offers potential for hands-on client experience, teamwork, documentary storytelling, portfolio material, appropriate production credits, and career exposure.

Sponsorship & Potential Student Stipends

As the project develops, Dobreena would like to collaborate with the participating school to explore sponsorships, partnerships, grants, or other approved funding for production expenses and potential student stipends. Any compensation would be arranged with the school under district policies, applicable work-based-learning requirements, and parental or guardian permissions where required.

The Final Vision

The project could culminate in a student-produced documentary and premiere screening for students, educators, families, community leaders, media, partners, and potential sponsors.

Students would not simply be watching history. They would help document it.

Educators, school program leaders, and prospective sponsors are invited to discuss participation and partnership opportunities.
